Nestlé: Stop trying to patent natural cures | SumOfUs
Nigella sativa -- more commonly known as fennel flower -- has been used as a cure-all remedy for over a thousand years. It treats everything from vomiting to fevers to skin diseases, and has been widely available in impoverished communities across the Middle East and Asia.
But now Nestlé is claiming to own it, and filing patent claims around the world to try and take control over the natural cure of the fennel flower and turn it into a costly private drug.

Grass-Fed Beef versus Grain-Fed Beef - Cooking Light
Grass-Fed Beef versus Grain-Fed Beef - Cooking Light
Shoppers are seeing more and more grass-fed beef in regular grocery stores, along with meat from breeds marketed as special (like Angus), and meat from organically raised animals. The local/sustainable movement has been singing the praises of the grass-fed cow, while the grain-fed industry has been under attack by food activists. The grass-fed cow, which eats from a pasture and is not "finished" on a diet of grains and supplements for rapid weight gain, is said by its promoters to be better for the planet (less energy goes into growing grass than grain); better for the beef eater (less overall fat, and more omega-3s and other "good" fats); and better for the cow (critics decry feedlot practices as inhumane). In this article, though, we're looking not at meat politics but at three things that most cooks are acutely interested in: price, taste, and nutrition.

Claire McCarthy, M.D.: How Being Human Messes Up Medical Research
Some great thoughts on medical research
Sometimes, as I'm talking to patients and their families, I realize that I have no idea what I'm talking about. Really.
The big catchword in medicine these days is "evidence-based." We are supposed to make our decisions about diagnoses and treatments based on research studies; we shouldn't do anything unless there is "evidence" to back us up.

In Europe, You'd Better Watch What You Say about Supplements
Commentary by Gert Schuitemaker, PhD (Netherlands) and Andrew W. Saul (USA)
(OMNS Apr 6, 2013) The government of the Netherlands, one of 27 European Union countries, continues to clamp down on alternative medicine. The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA, http://www.vwa.nl/english) has the tools in place to restrict communication of information about the beneficial effects of food and nutrients to promote health and effectively curb disease. And, most importantly, this bureaucracy makes all decisions as to how strict the rules are applied.
Netherlands law is backed up and strictly enforced by new EU rules based on very rigid codes regarding health claims for foods and dietary supplements. The power is held by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). These regulations are now in force in every European Union country.
